How to Take a Better Selfie! #yourewelcome {Sarajane.}

I’ve had many lovely people make the joke that they want advice on taking selfie’s.  Everyday I think my hair or my make-up looks good, you better believe I will be taking a picture of it. Mostly it’s due to the fact that I took the time to do it and I want it documented. But, I like to think it’s some deep expression of my inner workings as an artist.

I mean Van Gogh did self-portraits.

Not to mention, there’s no greater feeling then meeting someone in person who you’re friends with through social media and having them say, “wow, you look way better online!”

You’re welcome.

Step One: Have a face.

Step Two: Bring Your Face Closer to the Camera

Photo on 5-16-13 at 11.26 AM #3

Step Three: Try out different angles for your face and choose the one you like best. {This could take a while.}

Step Four: Bring your chin out and down. {This will eliminate double chins and boring jaw lines.}

This…

And definitely NOT this…

Step Five: Leave your mouth slightly open and don’t clench your jaw.

Wrong…

Step Six: Get bored and make silly faces for a while instead.

Step Seven: See what it looks like to add your hands in the frame.

Step Eight: Be aware of your eyes.

What not to do:

Angry eyes…

Step Nine: Use natural light. Photo on 5-16-13 at 11.35 AM #2

Step Ten: If you’re in the car taking selfies, make sure to turn the air on for that wind blown look. Other wise, you may look like your hair is eating your  neck.

Step Eleven: Use a filter to brighten your skin tone. Then, crop it into a square. {Oh hey instagram!}

photo-43

Step Twelve: Never, under any circumstances, allow people to see what you actually look like when you’re home alone.

Step Thirteen: Make sure to use tons of hashtags so that everyone in the world, not just those that follow you, can either like it or silently judge you from Asia.

#selfie #gpoy #myface #tellmeimpretty #seriouslydoyoulikemyface #hair

Step Fourteen: Do your best to come up with a more clever caption then “This is my face,” “Starting the day with a selfie, or “Thursday face.” {Note: Actual captions used by the author of this blog post.}

Step Fifteen: Remember, #sotd does not mean “Selfie of the Day” it means “Shoes of the Day” {*cough* Sarajane *cough*}

xoxo,

Sarajane.

Real Look: Librarian Chic! {Sarajane.}

I’m very fond of the look I like to call “Librarian Chic.”  Taking something that could be a little frumpy and doing what I can to modernize it. In this case I was happy to do that with both the skirt and the glasses. In fact, I’m 90% sure my papaw has these glasses. Only his lenses are prescription. If you have a problem with my fake glasses, Eric has already handled that situation with this post.

Another thing I’m excited about with this look is that I got the skirt at a thrift store. Yup. I am a self-confessed thrift store avoider. It’s just not my thing. I know all of the many reasons why we should shop at them. But, I rarely find things that I like and end up feeling like I wasted time. But, in this case, I do feel very grateful! The other thing I love about this skirt is that it has pockets! Girls, can we all at the same time just say a big thank you for the pocketed skirt/dress trend. Our clothes never have enough pockets.

I wore this outfit to the Bob Dylan concert here in town and I don’t regret it.

The skirt was purchased at a thrift store. The shirt at Old Navy. The belt at Target. The shoes at Old Navy. The glasses at a vintage shop in Savannah, GA. The necklace was my first anniversary gift from Kyle!

One of my Favorite Make-up Secrets! {Sarajane.}

I think growing up as the only girl left me with some disadvantages. One of those being that i didn’t have an older sister to teach me the ins and outs of girl-dom. I figured out most things by myself and that has left me stunted in a few areas. I always miss a spot when shaving my legs, I didn’t learn to straighten my hair until I was far too old, and I’m terrible at applying mascara!

I’ve figured out a little trick that helps me with the last of those problems! Watch the video below to find out what it is!!

Or, just watch it to see my weird make-up application face! Equally exciting!

Real Look: How to Dress for a Bad Day! {Sarajane.}

The fact is that most days I work alone in my office and see very few people during work hours and I know even fewer of them. So, I could technically get away with wearing yoga pants and sweatshirts everyday to work if I wanted to. Sometimes I do.

Today I chose to wear the sparkly shirt I wore on my birthday and a blazer.

It’s definitely a little more than I need to wear if I’m just sitting at a computer all day. When I was asked about being so dressed up this morning my response was this…

Well, I felt like shit when I woke up.

Let me explain…

The Art of Dining Alone! {Sarajane.}

At some point or another most of us have been in a situation where we had to eat alone at a restaurant. Your face burning with the realization that people are probably pitying you. The intense urge to awkwardly announce that you do indeed have friends and that someone somewhere probably loves you.

Real Look: Chambray Thursday! {Sarajane.}

I feel like it’s been far too long since I did a Real Look. Truth of the matter is I’m rarely around someone who can take my picture. So, today’s real look is photographed by myself with my fancy pants cell phone! hehe. Maybe this is good so that you know we’re not constantly being followed around by photographers. Today’s look is my go-to outfit. If I’m worried that I’ll be uncomfortable that day or just don’t want to put much thought into what I’m wearing, I go to this! It’s really comfortable and easy to wear while at the same time being on trend.

I’m currently playing an accessory game with my friend Emily right now that I will tell you about very soon!!! Because of it, I built today’s outfit around my scarf in order to wear it.

My Favorite Weekly Asheville Activities! {Sarajane.}

It’s been a hot-minute since we did an Asheville-centric post. It’s about time don’t you think? We’re all so proud to live here and absolutely love showing our friends around town when they visit. I honestly feel like I’m always doing something. But, it’s hard to nail down what it is that is so great about this town. So, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things to do throughout the week or on a regular basis in general. For those in Asheville, I”m sure you have things that are your favorite that aren’t listed, these are just the things I do on the regular. Feel free to share your favorites in the comments below!

1. Being a regular in general.

I used to be of the mindset that variety is best. Going somewhere different everyday and trying something new everytime you go out. But, there’s something so comforting and enjoyable about being a regular. Especially in a town like this which is full of tourists, it’s nice to have your spots that you can go as a refuge! The three places that I frequent the most have become so popular on my instagram that friends who come into town have started asking when we’re going to go there. They are as follows…

High Five Coffee Bar!

The single best coffee shop in town. We have a lot of great shops. But, there’s just no comparing the level of quality they’re putting out right now.

Let’s talk about Who I am and Who You are! {Sarajane.}

I’m going to start this post off by asking you to enter into a judgement free zone. Have you gotten there? So, nothing I say is going to make you think I’m cooky right? Ok then, here goes…

So, we LOVE Oprah in our house. Well, most of us do. I’ll give you a quick guess as to which one of us isn’t an Oprah fanatic…

But, the rest of us. We treat Oprah like our church. It’s nice when we can all sit around and watch an episode of life class and then talk about what that means in our lives and what we’d like to apply.

Recently we watched the episode where she talked about the phrase “I am…” The highlight of the lesson was that whatever phrase you use to follow “I am…” is going to come and find you.

Take a moment to think about that…

I’ll wait…

My Everyday Make-up Routine! {Sarajane.}

Hi everyone! I’ve got another video tutorial coming your way today! After I did my highlighting and countouring video I got a lot of requests for my everyday make-up routine. So, I’m sharing that with you all today! Check the video out below!

My Basic Skincare Routine! {Sarajane.}

After I did my basic highlighting and contouring video I got a lot of questions about my everyday make-up. I promise that I’ll get to that. But, when I started planning that post out I realized it’s only successful if my skin looks good AND my skin only looks good if I’m following my skincare regime. So, I have to start there. It’s not overly complicated, in fact, the basics are quite simple. So, you can’t be disappointed because I warned you!

It should also be noted that good skin comes from inside as well. If I’m eating lots of veggies and drinking plenty of water that’s when it’s the ‘glowiest.’

This is my face.

If you think my skin looks good then follow these steps.

If you think it looks bad then do the opposite.

If you think it’s look alright then try these steps out and decide for yourself.
