Review: Dem Nugget Boys {kyle}

Lately I’ve wanted to get out to a few more shows in town. This is something that I used to enjoy doing a lot but I haven’t been able to do as much recently due to my work schedule. So I made a goal for myself to see at least one show a month and I feel like that’s attainable. One that I’m excited about later this month is Joshua James at the Grey Eagle, but today I wanted to share my review of a local band that recently played at the Lexington Avenue Brewery called Dem Nugget Boys.

Dem Nugget Boys is one of the best acts floating around Asheville. Formed in 2012 by college friends Justin Neese and Devin Entmacher, DNB is best described as a satirical rap group. I know what you’re probably thinking; “How could these guys be any good? Clearly they are two white guys in thrift store clothes from Asheville.” And to that I would respond, “Get with the times. It’s 2013 and one of the most popular songs on the radio is called Thrift Shop and it’s by a white guy from Seattle.”

According to Justin Neese, though, DNB thrives on these low expectations. “People don’t know what to expect,” he says. “They see two white guys with a silly rap name and they don’t expect much. But then we come out, drop some beats, and get people excited. By the end of the show the energy in the room is usually off the charts.”

Neese and Entmacher are brilliant in this way. They read the crowd well and work the energy in the room. Neese’s description above is spot on with my experience with the band. I really didn’t know quite what to think before going to the show. I was primarily there to support some friends and didn’t have high hopes for the bands that were playing, but by the end of the show I was definitely a DNB fan.

Lyrically these guys can be compared to Lonely Island. They use that same sort of clever silliness but give it a uniquely Asheville twist. One of my favorite songs of the night was Asheville State of Mind, which, as you might guess, is a parody of Jay-Z’s popular Empire State of Mind. Some sample lyrics include:

DE: “And you know the tourists come in the fall to see the leaves”

JN: “Pretty trees mother$&#@*s”

DE: “Yeah, gets real colorful up in this b!$%*…”

But even if you’re not from Asheville you can appreciate the well-crafted rhymes and methodical beats of DNB. They seem to draw influences from a wide variety of sources ranging from the Libyan revolution to Dunder-Mifflin to farmers’ markets – and that’s just one song.

 Unfortunately, Dem Nugget Boys won’t be playing another show in Asheville for a while. Co-founder Devin Entmacher recently relocated to Los Angeles to pursue other interests, but the band is not necessarily done. According to Neese, the two remain in close contact and plan to collaborate more in the future.

In the meantime, you can get your DNB fix via their Myspace page. Plus, you can catch Neese’s other project, SEXY {with local stand-up artist Taylor Rogers}, playing several shows around town this spring.

Until next time.

My YouTube Favorites {Tyler}

Every now and then you just need a good laugh, cry, or chance to think about your life and everything that is wrong with it. Well, videos online are the perfect chance to do all three! I thought I’d share some of my top picks for YouTube channels and go to videos on the web. You’ve probably seen some of these before, but if not, you’ve got to check them out!

Willam’s Beatdown

Willam is a drag queen and former contestant of RuPaul’s Drag Race (we’re still not quite sure why he got kicked off) who is rude, raunchy, and freakin’ hilarious. His videos on Youtube through The Stylish are all about making fun of other YouTube sensations. I love it. Continue reading

My Favorite Weekly Asheville Activities! {Sarajane.}

It’s been a hot-minute since we did an Asheville-centric post. It’s about time don’t you think? We’re all so proud to live here and absolutely love showing our friends around town when they visit. I honestly feel like I’m always doing something. But, it’s hard to nail down what it is that is so great about this town. So, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite things to do throughout the week or on a regular basis in general. For those in Asheville, I”m sure you have things that are your favorite that aren’t listed, these are just the things I do on the regular. Feel free to share your favorites in the comments below!

1. Being a regular in general.

I used to be of the mindset that variety is best. Going somewhere different everyday and trying something new everytime you go out. But, there’s something so comforting and enjoyable about being a regular. Especially in a town like this which is full of tourists, it’s nice to have your spots that you can go as a refuge! The three places that I frequent the most have become so popular on my instagram that friends who come into town have started asking when we’re going to go there. They are as follows…

High Five Coffee Bar!

The single best coffee shop in town. We have a lot of great shops. But, there’s just no comparing the level of quality they’re putting out right now.

Books: Chuck Klosterman {kyle}

Growing up I was always a reader. I was the kind of person who would read three or four books at a time just for fun. For the most part, I never minded reading for school, though my senior year at UNCW was pretty intense. However, in 2012, I’m not sure if I finished a single book. I don’t know what changed, but every time I started something I would just feel bogged down and unable to really focus on the words. This year I resolved to read again.

For Christmas I received a gift card for Barnes & Noble and went book shopping {one of the only kinds of shopping I really enjoy}. I didn’t really have anything in mind, so I just wandered aimlessly through the store. In the past I’ve always been the kind of person who reads really heavy stuff like The Paradox of NC Politics or Voices of Protest: Documents of Courage and Dissent. Since I’ve been struggling with finishing anything recently, I decided that maybe I should look for something a little lighter to get back into the habit of reading.

Joshua James, From the Top of Willamette Mountain Review {kyle}

A few years ago when Sarajane and I were new to Couchsurfing we got a request from a band that was touring through Wilmington. They wrote a pretty cool message about using Couchsurfing on their tour so that they could meet and connect with people instead of spending their nights in hotel rooms. I hadn’t heard of them at the time, so I looked them up and instantly became a fan.

At that point, Joshua James had recently released his album – Build Me This. The band crashed at our house and got us into the show at the Soapbox. It was an awesome show and they were great house guests. I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

Mumford and Sons, Babel Review {kyle}

The past few months have been great for music with new album releases by some of my favorite bands – mewithoutYou, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Avett Brothers, and, most recently, Mumford and Sons.

Now, if you read my review of the Avett’s latest, the Carpenter, you would know that I was a little disappointed with that one. There are some awesome songs on it, but as a whole I didn’t feel like it was their best. I was a little worried that the same might happen with Mumford. After all, they’re a young band and only have one album and a small EP under their belt. I was expecting a little bit of a sophomore slump.

The Avett Brothers, The Carpenter Review {kyle}

If you forced me to choose a favorite band I would have to choose the Avett Brothers. There are two others that would make it a close call, but the Avett’s have been a big part of my life. They are also one of Sarajane’s favorites and our entire wedding was full of their music. We walked down the isle to one of their songs and danced our first dance to another. We’ve given each other a number of their tracks on mix-tapes for each other. Their style seems to fit with ours and their lyrics always seem to capture our feelings so well.

For those reasons, I have been incredibly excited about their newest album, The Carpenter, which was released yesterday. It has been possible to stream The Carpenter on NPR’s First Listens for the last few weeks, so I’ve had a chance to really absorb this one before downloading it yesterday. I’ve got to say that it’s a little different. Continue reading

This New Century: Dan Reeder {kyle}

One of my favorite authors of all time is Samuel Beckett.

Most folks don’t recognize the name immediately, but Beckett is most famous for a play called Waiting for Godot. His style of writing is known as absurdism. Absurdist literature is interesting because as you read it, you’re not entirely sure what’s happening. There are really only two options – either absurdist authors are geniuses at creating intricate symbolism and depth or they are just throwing random words out on the page. The thing I love about it is that there is really no way to ever know. Beckett himself seemed to enjoy that fact and would never really divulge any information about the true meaning of his writing. He would always claim that it was open to the interpretation of the reader/viewer and that was where true meaning could be found.

If Samuel Beckett had been an American folk singer I’m pretty sure he would have been Dan Reeder.

City Love: Atlanta, GA! {Sarajane}

It’s not uncommon for people in the southeast to avoid Atlanta all together. It’s not known for being hip or easy to navigate. It’s also-in my opinion-a bit underrated. I travel to Atlanta quite often for work and have been able to find some really great places to frequent. Having friends who live there sharing their hot spots with me has been wonderful. I spent a few days their last week for a photography conference and found myself really looking forward to hitting up my favorite spots! I decided I had to share them with you, that way – next time you’re in town – you can at least eat, drink, and sleep well!
