Crafternoon: Gallery Glass

Houston, we have a privacy problem.

Ever since Eric and I moved into our new bedroom here in the house (the room that used to be the office) there have been a few issues that needed addressing.

Being the world’s best procrastinator, I waited around before taking care of two windows that gave our neighbors – or friends and roommates – some high dollar views of Eric and I (you’ve got to be smart in this economy and charge for stuff like that). One was the window above our bed and the other was the window in the bathroom attached to our room. For the window above our bed I chose a quick and easy fix. I measured the window, cut some fabric I had lying around from another project, used iron on hem tape to put in a loop at the top, cut it in half, and put the new curtains up with a tension rod. Simple! I wanted to only cover the lower half of the window – the part that gave the neighbors a view of something more than they bargained for – and still wanted light to flow in through the top half.

Now, on to the main project. The bathroom window needed a different treatment. We really needed something to help with privacy in the bathroom, but I didn’t want to do a curtain for two reasons: 1) the bathroom is super small and needs all the help it can get in terms of lighting and helping the space feel larger and 2) I’m just scared of a fabric curtain in the bathroom – what if it grows mold or mildew?!  Continue reading

Creating a Gallery Wall {Tyler}

A couple of weeks ago I posted about covering your walls with great art on a budget and talked a little bit about using Modge Podge and found objects to decorate in the form of a gallery wall. Well, dear readers, today I’m going to take you through some of the steps Eric and I have taken in creating that gallery wall of our own, and show you some photos of our new room.

Wall Art on a Shoestring {Tyler}

Eric and I are moving!!! To a different room in the house. Calm down, calm down – we’re still a part of The 20 Somethings.

For those of you who don’t know, Sarajane has moved her business operations out of the house to Downtown Asheville, opening up the space formally known as our office for Eric and I  to get a bedroom upgrade. That also means that our room will be transitioning into a guest room – and THAT MEANS a real bed for all of our lovely guests!

But, all of that to say that moving means it time to update some of our wall art in different rooms in the house, move some stuff around, and create some new art as well! I think having things hanging on your walls is pretty dang important – but you don’t have to spend tons of money on those terrible metal cut out wall hangings or paintings of beach scenes from Homegoods. And you don’t really need a lot of artistic ability to create unique and exciting artwork. Here are some of my favorite pieces of artwork hanging around our house – and they’ve all been created with as little money as possible!

A Very Handmade Christmas {Tyler}

This time last year Eric and I were scrounging together as much money as we could to make Christmas gifts for our family and friends. To be honest, we were broke as hell (well…we kind of still are, but that’s beside the point), but we wanted to make special gifts for those we love.

A handmade Christmas is a great way to create gifts that are affordable and meaningful. I think it means a lot receiving something from someone that has been made and not simply purchased. There were three really simple and affordable gifts we put together last year that I want to share with you today! Try them out for gifts this holiday season or for upcoming birthdays, baby showers, and more.

Christmastime is Here {Tyler}

It’s the week after Thanksgiving and that means it’s time for Christmas decorating and to start preparing for the winter holiday season!

I love the holidays. Starting in October with Halloween decorating and going through Thanksgiving and Christmas, I love everything about autumn and winter. I love decorating for each holiday and making each individual and unique. For me, Christmas is my favorite! I’ll actually spend the rest of today making and hanging ornaments, putting out garland and pine boughs, hanging lights, and getting our home as Christmas-y as possible.

I’m a theme decorator, myself. I like to pick a color, a scheme, an area of focus, something to help with my decorating for the season. The past few years I’ve done specific colors – I believe last year it was all about traditional red and green and the year before was red and silver. This year is going to be a light, bright, and airy Christmas with lots of whites, creams, silver, sparkles, and lights. To me, more than anything, Christmas is all about “light in the darkness” and bright, happy colors – that’s what this year’s decor will reflect. I’M SO EXCITED!!!

Make Your Own Skinny Jeans {Guest Blog from Sarah from Fika Home}

Hello new 20-something friends! My name is Sarah Swenson, and I live in Saint Paul Minnesota. I love DIY, artistic endeavors, drinking coffee, and my glue gun. I blog about my adventures on my website, and I also stock an online store with fabulous handcrafted home décor for you to peruse.

Today, I’m going to show you how to make your very own skinny jeans! Grab an non-skinny pair of pants and your sewing machine, and let’s make some magic!

So, let’s get real here: I loooove skinny jeans, but after 8+ years of dance classes, they quite often do not fit my large calves. Solution? Make my own, of course. At the beginning of September I snagged 3 pairs of pants at a thrift store for around $4 each.

DIY Screen Printing {Guest Blog from Rachael from Lovely Crafty Home}

Hi 20 Somethings readers!

My name is Rachael, and I am so excited that I’ve been asked to guest post by some of the coolest bloggers around. It’s sorta like when you get all dressed up to go out on the town, and you look so good you get carded for the first time in 10 years. Oh heck yes, I’m passing for 20 something.

Whilst Kyle and Sarajane are off gallivanting in Panama, I’m stuck here in the freezing cold going to share with you a project from my DIY blog, Lovely Crafty Home.
Now before you start thinking I’m going lead you down some dark path involving a sledge hammer and a hardhat, hear me out…this project is easy peasy, involves no power tools, and has endless possibilities.

I’m going to show you how to transfer black and white images straight from the printer onto fabric. The result looks very similar to screen printing, except you can do it at home!

Make your own vintage tee shirts. Customize plain dishtowels for a high end look. Make snarky onesies for babies. Design fabric gift tags for the holidays. Seriously, the list goes on and on!

DIY: Coffee Bar Makeover {Tyler}

Happy Monday, everyone! Today I want to show you a recent and exciting update to The 20 Somethings house – our repainted and update coffee bar!

The coffee bar is one of the most fun parts of our house – it sits in our kitchen and holds our Keurig coffee machine, espresso machine, coffee grinder, and our single serve drink blender. Above is a shelf full of coffee brewing instruments, mugs, and syrups. Inside the coffee bar is where we store coffee, teas, mugs, and breakfast foods. It is my favorite.

Halloween Decorating and Fall Day

It’s already the first of October! Can you believe it?!

With October comes my favorite time of year – fall (or autumn, if you’re hoity-toity). I love everything about this season – the leaves changing, the cooler temperatures, the changing wardrobe, pumpkin-flavored everything, fall-scented candles, and, most of all, decorating for fall and Halloween! It’s so much fun.

Eric and I will be celebrating our third annual fall day this Saturday and I thought I would share our plan with you all AND let you know how I go about decorating for holidays – Halloween and autumn, specifically – on a dime.

DIY Table Makeover {Tyler}

This post was originally posted at TylerJMcCall.com in September of 2011.

This little table is one of my favorite things. In our new home it is spending a quite life in the basement – waiting to be used for some special occasion or big event. But, in our old home, it served an important role as the kitchen table in a very small eating area.

I had wanted a smaller table with fold out leaves for our old house. It needed to fit against a wall in a wide hallway. I needed the table to be useful for eating for two or four people and for craft time.

The table that we ended up with was a great thrift store item my mom found in Brevard. This is how I refinished it!

Here is what we started with:
